Summary:
A wealthy sorcerer's invitation to sing with his automaton leads Nimira, whose family's disgrace brought her from a palace to poverty, into political intrigue, enchantments, and a friendship with a fairy prince who needs her help.

plaintive note:  expressing sorrow or melancholy; mournful

automaton:  a mechanical figure or contrivance constructed to act as if by its own motive power; robot

railroad baron:  an important financier or industrialist, esp. one with great power in a particular area

skulking around my girls!”:  moving in a stealthy manner

drab plaid:  any fabric woven of differently colored yarns in a cross barred pattern

strong and lithe:  flexible

fearsome statue:  causing fear; causing awe or respect

haggard:   having a gaunt, wasted, or exhausted appearance, as from prolonged suffering, exertion, or anxiety; worn
